A seven-member integrated cast of singers, actors and musicians, featuring veteran singer/actor Charles Williams and traditional musician Bruce Hutton, trace the 500-year musical dialogue between Africans and Euro-Americans in North America and Africa. In the crucible of conflict between the races, a rich musical legacy was forged. HESPERUS presents a moving program of period readings and work songs, play-party games, ring shouts, spirituals, Civil War ballads, Abolitionist hymns and hollers, as well as 1920s blues, ragtime songs, and Ethiopian minstrelsy. Audiences will pat Juba and sing call-and–response hyms. |
